Interdivisional Registration
Johns Hopkins students can capitalize on all that America’s first research institution has to offer by taking courses at schools/divisions across the university.*
This information is for degree-seeking students. Non-degree students including postdoctoral fellows should contact SEAM.
Fine Print
*To take a course in another JHU division, students must
- submit an interdivisional registration request and
- any required approvals.
Read important information below, including home and host division details.
Glossary
When students take a course at another JHU school, or division, it is called interdivisional registration, or IDR.
- Your home division is where you take the majority of your classes and is noted at the top of SIS Self-Service.
- The host division is the school/division you are visiting.
Interdivisional Registration (IDR)
Potential Tuition Charges
Tuition charges for IDR courses vary by division and program. Please confirm potential charges by submitting a SEAM ‘question about my bill’ ticket for more information.
Create a Backup Plan
Courses may fill, even if space is available when your request is submitted, because home division students have enrollment priority. Read about waitlists below under your host division.
Division Requirements
All students must meet both the home and host division requirements. The division hosting the course will have final approval.
Transcript Effects
The resulting grade and credits will appear on your transcript and, if applicable, will affect your GPA. Any additional details are below under your home division.
Interdivisional Alternatives
If interdivisional registration isn’t possible, you may be able to apply to be a non-degree student at another JHU division.
IDR Timeline
Submission of Request
- Requests may be submitted as early as the home division’s registration period.
- The request must be submitted to SEAM no later than the host division’s add deadline.
Enrollment
The host division will begin registration for interdivisional students a few weeks before the start of courses.
Course Change Deadlines
Students must follow the host division’s deadlines for adding, dropping, or withdrawing from courses, refund policies, or grade system changes.
